We all walk through times in
our lives when we need counsel. In fact James says in James
1:2, “Consider it all joy when you encounter various
trials.” Trials – those difficult times where we are just
not sure what to do or how to handle what has been done to
us – will often times require some outside wisdom. There are
just times when we need someone to talk to – someone that
can help. Make sure the counsel you receive is biblical. Not everyone who calls themselves a “Christian counselor” uses Scripture as their guide and source of wisdom. When considering a counselor you can ask, “What role does the Bible have in counseling time?” You need God’s word for your life, not someone’s opinion! The best counselor will be one who is professionally trained that can bring all the best skill under the submission and leadership of Jesus to you and your needs. Counselors must recognize the healing power of Jesus, the role and work of the Holy Spirit, and the truth regarding spiritual warfare. They also need to be able to discern the necessity of prescribing medication based on the case they have before them.
